Getting started:
You need to be at least 17 years old and hold a provisional licence to start your driving lessons. You can collect an application form from the post office, or go to direct.gov.uk
Getting ready:
Wear comfortable shoes when having your lessons – this will make it easier to feel the pedals. Read the Highway Code – be aware of the rules of the road.
Having a lesson:
Your driving instructor will collect you punctually from your arranged point. The session consists of a short briefing and then the lesson. The instructor will keep a record of your progress and will advise when you are ready to apply for your practical driving test.
After a few lessons you will need to start thinking about taking your theory test.
Theory Test:
To be able to take your practical driving test you need to have passed your theory test. This consists of two parts – the multiple choice questions and hazard perception part. You will need to pass both parts to pass the theory test.
Practical Test:
Your driving test will start with an eyesight check and some vehicle safety questions. You will then start your practical driving test. The driving part of the test will last about 40 minutes. Throughout the test the examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving including when you are carrying out one reversing manoeuvre and maybe an emergency stop. To pass the test you will need to commit less than 16 driving faults but no serious or dangerous faults.
Independent driving section of the driving test
Your driving test will include around ten minutes of independent driving. This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently.
After passing your test:
You can arrange to take the Pass Plus course. This will help reduce your insurance cost. The Pass Plus course includes motorway, bad weather and night driving. This all increases your experience as a driver.
